Out of the Darkness into the Light

Many a time, people find themselves in a dark place. A place where they feel so isolated and alone. How does this ever come about in one’s life? Sometimes, we do not even realize that we are in a dark cocoon because we tend to be in denial and feel that everything is alright. This bleak feeling will pass. What if it does not pass and one day passes into the next and instead of feeling better, we may feel worse?

Instead of seeking help, we continue to smile at everyone and even make jokes which made people laugh and think that we have such a great sense of humor. How long can one hide behind those smiles and laughter?  It may come a time when we are teetering on the edge and we finally snap and commit the unthinkable – suicide!!

Suicide is indeed a coward’s way out of life. It is indeed very sad for one to feel so lost, isolated, and helpless to want to commit suicide. What is suicide? Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death. One thing for sure is that depression that ends in suicide does not discriminate.

Mental disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety disorders bipolar disorders, and substance abuse, including alcoholism and the use of benzodiazepines, are risk factors. Some suicides are impulsive acts due to stress, such as financial difficulties, relationship problems, or bullying. Those who have previously attempted suicide are at a higher risk for future attempts.

Common methods of suicide include hanging, pesticide poisoning, and firearms.  Suicides resulted in 828,000 global deaths in 2015, an increase from 712,000 deaths in 1990. This makes suicide the 10th leading cause of death worldwide.
